A 29-year-old man was in custody Friday on suspicion of robbing and punching a 67-year-old hotel desk clerk, who died the next day, Carlsbad police said.

Brian Lefler was arrested Thursday evening in Oceanside following a long foot chase, Carlsbad police Lt. Marc Reno said.

Lefler allegedly punched Barbara Novelich of Oceanside in the face and forced her to the ground while robbing the Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad early Sunday morning.

Novelich was treated at a local hospital following the attack but not admitted.

The next day, she was found lying dead in her bed after a neighbor asked police to conduct a welfare check, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported.
